P2425 code definition

Exhaust Gas Recirculation Cooling Valve Control Circuit Open

What the P2425 code means

P2425 is an OBD-II generic code that the engine control module (ECM) detected the engine exhaust gas recirculation cooling bypass valve (EGRCBV) control circuit is open.

What causes the P2425 code?

  • The ECM has detected an open circuit for controlling the cooling bypass valve for the EGR system and sets the P2425 code and turns on the Check Engine Light.

  • The EGRCBV has an open circuit in the valve.

  • The connection to the EGRCBV has loose or corroded pins in the connection.

What are the symptoms of the P2425 code?

  • The Check Engine Light will be illuminated and the code is set in the ECM memory.
  • The engine could have an engine ignition ping or knock on acceleration.
  • The engine may fail emissions test from excessive NOX in the exhaust tests.
  • The EGR system may have other failures from carbon buildup in the system.

How does a mechanic diagnose the P2425 code?

  • Scans codes and documents the freeze frame data in order to verify the problem

  • Clears the engine and ETC codes and road tests the vehicle to verify the concern comes back

  • Visually checks the vacuum hoses, wiring, and connections to the EGR valve and control solenoid

  • Disconnects and checks that the EGRCBV is getting the proper power and ground signals from the ECM to open the valve when the ECM is commanded to open, and close the valve through the scanner.

Common mistakes when diagnosing the P2425 code?

  • Replacing the EGRCBV before checking the connector for corrosion on the pins

How serious is the P2425 code?

  • A failed EGR valve can cause the engine to have excessive ignition pre-ignition that can cause internal engine damage to the piston and valves.

  • The Check Engine Light on will cause the vehicle to fail emission testing from excessive NOX gases.

What repairs can fix the P2425 code?

  • Replacing the EGRCBV solenoid
  • Replacing a broken connector to the EGRCBV solenoid

Additional comments for consideration regarding the P2425 code

Code P2425 is for the EGR cooler coolant flow control valve, and if the EGR is not cooled correctly, it can get carbon fouled too quick and become clogged. This can increase the pre-ignition in the engine and cause internal piston and cylinder head damage.
