P2297 code definition

O2 Sensor Out of Range During Deceleration Bank 1 Sensor 1

(May be seen with other oxygen sensor codes)

What the P2297 code means

P2297 means that the oxygen sensor (O2) has out of range sensor performance when the vehicle is decelerating for bank 1 sensor 1. When this occurs, the electronic control unit (ECU) detects the out of range performance and causes the P2297 code to be set. This causes the Check Engine Light to be illuminated on the dashboard.

With the check engine light comes a failsafe mode that is used to protect the vehicle from any further damage. Once the failsafe mode is enacted, it will remain until normal operation is found, or the code is repaired.

What causes the P2297 code?

  • Exhaust leaks
  • Failed oxygen sensor
  • Open or short in the oxygen sensor wiring harness
  • Poor electrical connection
  • ECU failure

What are the symptoms of the P2297 code?

How does a mechanic diagnose the P2297 code?

  1. Checks for any codes stored in the ECU, including history or pending codes.

  2. Notes all codes and the freeze frame data associated with each code for future use

  3. Clears all the codes for a fresh start

  4. Takes the vehicle on a road test to attempt to duplicate the symptoms

  5. Performs a visual inspection will be to look for any obvious signs of failure and damage

  6. Uses the scan tool to look at the live engine data and the oxygen sensor readings while the vehicle is operated (if the readings do not change as the throttle is operated, then a multimeter will be used to check for voltage at the oxygen sensor)

  7. Checks the exhaust for any leaks present

  8. Lastly, checks the ECU for any faults (this test will be done by the manufacturer's test procedures)

Common mistakes when diagnosing the P2297 code

With even the simplest trouble code, mistakes can easily be made when diagnosing them if step-by-step diagnosis is not performed. Skipping, or not completing any step can lead to errors and wasting time and money.

How serious is the P2297 code?

The P2297 code should not prevent the vehicle from being driven to a safe location once the code is set. If the vehicle runs poorly, it should not be driven until it is repaired and working as designed again.

  • Replacing an oxygen sensor
  • Repairing any exhaust leaks found

Additional comments for consideration regarding the P2297 code

Leaking exhaust can be a common cause of the P2297 code. Diagnosing exhaust leaks is usually quick and easy if you know what to look for. The first sign is a sooty black stain on the exhaust. This is a sign that unburned fuel is exhiting the exhaust before the catalytic converter. The other way to tell is that you can usually feel the air exiting the exhaust at the leak point.
