What the P2086 code means?

P2086 is an OBD-II generic code for the exhaust gas temperature sensor circuit signal is out of range for bank 2 Sensor 2 to the engine control module (ECM). This means the sensor signal voltage signal return is out of the sensor range and not within specification.

What causes the P2086 code?

  • The ECM signal return from the bank 2 sensor 2 exhaust temperature sensor is not giving a steady reading output. The signal is not within specifications when it is working.

  • The ECM turns on the Check Engine light if the ECM detects a voltage return that is low or high and not giving a proper voltage return.

  • The wiring or connection to the sensor is loose or making poor contact.

  • The sensor or wiring is shorted to power.

What are the symptoms of the P2086 code?

  • The Check Engine light will be illuminated and the code is set in ECM memory as a fault.

  • The engine fault may be the P2086 and also particulate filter light may be illuminated.

How does a mechanic diagnose the P2086 code?

  • Scans codes and documents the code in the ECM memory. Checks freeze frame data.

  • Diagnose the code as per the manufacturer's pinpoint test to verify the sensor signal.

  • Checks the sensor connection for loose or corroded terminals.

  • Disconnects the sensor and sees if the voltage at the sensor is as specified for reference voltage.

  • Checks the sensor return voltage to see if the sensor is shorted to reference voltage.

Common mistakes when diagnosing the P2086 code?

  • Clearing ECM memory codes before checking the freeze frame data of the failure
  • Failing to clear ECM codes after the P2086 codes are fixed
  • Replacing the sensor when the connector has corrosion in the connections

How serious is the P2086 code?

Code P2086 is an indication that the sensor or connector may need to be serviced and/or repaired. The sensor is the most common cause of this code and failure. This sensor is needed to control the emission levels in most newer diesel engines.

What repairs can fix the P2086 code?

  • Replace the sensor after the connection is cleaned of any corrosion.
  • Repair the wiring or connection to the exhaust temperature sensor assembly.
  • Replace the ECM for a shorted circuit in the ECM temperature sensor circuit.

Additional comments for consideration regarding the P2086 code

Code P2086 can be generated from loose wire connections in the harness that is not secured and the connection is allowed to flex excessively. A short to power may be the wiring getting melted to the exhaust from not being secured properly.
