P2009 trouble code definition

P2009 is a general OBD2 diagnostic trouble code indicating a fault within the intake manifold runner control circuit.

This code is similar to P2005, P2006, P2007, P2008, P2010, P2013 and P2015.

What the P2009 code means

P2009 means the intake manifold runner control circuit has excessively low voltage for bank 1. Once the ECU figures out that low voltage is present in the intake manifold runner control circuit a Check Engine Light will be triggered.

The Check Engine Light will be displayed on the dashboard and may be accompanied by a failsafe mode which will remain in effect until the code is cleared or normal voltage is detected.

What causes the P2009 code?

  • Wiring harness has an open or short
  • Faulty or stuck intake manifold runner
  • Electrical connection that is less than optimal
  • Intake manifold runner control solenoid has failed.

What are the symptoms of the P2009 code?

  • In some cases the driver may only notice the Check Engine Light without any other symptoms.

  • Some other vehicles may find the engine lacks power at lower RPMs and seems to run erratically.

How does a mechanic diagnose the P2009 code?

  • A mechanic will begin by hooking up a scan tool to the ECU through the DLC port. This provides access to the history, pending, and current codes that include the freeze frame data which tells technicians what the vehicle was doing when the code was set.

  • The scan tool will be used to clear all of the codes from the ECU.

  • Next, the vehicle will be test driven to try to duplicate the malfunction.

  • Once the malfunctions are duplicated, a visual inspection is needed looking for anything blatantly futile or damaged.

  • The scan tool is then used to monitor intake manifold runner position and solenoid operating throughout the engine rain.

  • Lastly, the intake manifold runner will be checked for the proper voltage.

Common mistakes when diagnosing the P2009 code

  • Mistakes can be made when the intake manifold runner is replaced when the fault lies with the flaps getting stuck.

  • Step by step diagnosis is required to avoid and prevent shoddy work effort.

How serious is the P2009 code?

The P2009 code will not prevent the vehicle from driving to a safe location once the code has been triggered. As with any code it should be repaired as soon as possible for normal vehicle operation.

What repairs can fix the P2009 code?

Additional comments for consideration regarding the P2009 code

An advanced level scan tool is incredibly useful for diagnosis of P2009. These scan tools let technicians view live data which in turns can show if a sensor or solenoid is functioning properly or not quick.
