P0930 trouble code definition

A P0930 trouble code is related to a vehicle’s automatic transmission and its shift lock solenoid that keeps the gear shifter from being moved out of park without the brake pedal pressed down.

What the P0930 code means

P0930 is an OBD-II generic powertrain code for low voltage problem with the gear shift lock solenoid in that the powertrain control module (PCM) will not think the brake pedal is pressed. The gear shift lock solenoid works in conjunction with the brake light switch.

What causes the P0930 code?

A P0930 will rarely have more than one cause, but others include:

What are the symptoms of the P0930 code?

Pure and simple, your gear shifter will not be able to shift out of park. Most modern automatic transmissions have a fail safe built in that can be accessed via a screwdriver.

How does a mechanic diagnose the P0930 code?

Firstly, your mechanic will bypass the gear shift solenoid via an access panel usually near the shifter itself. If this works, the solenoid will be tested for continuity and then replaced.

Common mistakes when diagnosing the P0930 code

While rare, low battery voltage can cause a gear shift solenoid to fail.

How serious is the P0930 code?

Not being able to shift out of park basically immobilizes a vehicle, so you could consider a P0930 serious. This does not cause serious damage to a vehicle though.

What repairs can fix the P0930 code?

The most common repairs for a P0930 are as follows:

Additional comments for consideration regarding the P0930 code

If you ever encounter a P0930, look at your shifter column for a visual tab that could be opened. This is the bypass and it can be used to shift the gear out of park. A small screwdriver will typically be used here.
