Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC): P0516

P0516 code definition

The PCM stores the P0516 code when the battery temperature sensor circuit has reported a temperature reading that is lower than the preset specifications from the manufacturer.

What the P0516 code means

In order to ensure that the battery operates and charges correctly, the battery temperature is monitored by the PCM. Battery voltage is inversely connected to temperature: the higher the voltage, the colder the temperature reading will be. Therefore, if the PCM detects a temperature reading that is too low, it means that the battery voltage is very high, and is not operating at optimal levels. In this case, the PCM will store the P0516 code.

What causes the P0516 code?

In most cases, this code is caused by a faulty battery temperature sensor. Damaged or loose electrical wiring and connectors can also be to blame. This code can also be stored if the engine overheats or if the battery is excessively corroded.

What are the symptoms of the P0516 code?

In most cases, the driver will only observe the illuminated Check Engine Light. No other symptoms are typical with the P0516 code.

How does a mechanic diagnose the P0516 code?

After this code has been detected by an OBD-II scanner, the mechanic should begin with a visual inspection of all wiring and other electrical components. After any damaged, loose, corroded, or shorted components are repaired, the code should be cleared from the PCM, and the system should be retested.

If the code returns, the mechanic should test the voltage and ground signal at the temperature sensor, and compare this information with the manufacturer’s specifications. If the data does not match, the sensor is bad and should be replaced. If the data does match, the mechanic should begin testing related circuits until the fault is discovered.

Common mistakes when diagnosing the P0516 code

The most common mistake made when diagnosing the P0516 code is to replace the vehicle’s battery. It is far more likely that the sensor or the components within the sensor circuit are to blame.

How serious is the P0516 code?

Although there are no visible symptoms with this code, this issue is still considered a critical problem within the workings of the vehicle. Without the ability to properly monitor the battery operation, there may be larger repairs needed in the future. When the P0516 code is detected, it should be addressed right away.

What repairs can fix the P0516 code?

In order to repair the P0516 code, a mechanic may attempt any of the following:
