P0282 code definition

P0282 is the code for Cylinder 8 Injector Circuit Low, indicating that a problem has been detected in the electrical circuit which controls the fuel injector for cylinder 8.

What the P0282 code means

Fuel injectors deliver a mixture of air and fuel to the engine. The injector’s components work together to send a signal to the vehicle’s computer, converting information about the fuel mixture into a voltage reading. When the PCM (powertrain control module) receives a signal that is outside of the expected parameters, it may result in the P0282 code being stored. This typically indicates insufficient or absent fuel delivery on the part of cylinder 8’s injector.

What causes the P0282 code?

Conditions that may cause this DTC (diagnostic trouble code) to set include:

  • A dirty or plugged fuel injector
  • A faulty fuel injector
  • An open or short in the fuel injector circuitry
  • Corroded or loose connectors at the cylinder 8 fuel injector
  • A problem with the fuel injector driver within the PCM

Very rarely, there may be a faulty PCM. This is not the norm, and all other diagnostic avenues should be exhausted before assuming this cause.

What are the symptoms of the P0282 code?

The Service Engine Soon or Check Engine Light will typically illuminate, and you may notice a dip in fuel efficiency. The engine may also suffer from reduced power, and it may run rough.

How does a mechanic diagnose the P0282 code?

Diagnosis of a fuel injector circuit fault may include:

  • Scanning the vehicle’s computer and recording the freeze frame data as well as any other faults that are present

  • Clearing the codes and test driving the vehicle to see if they return

  • Diagnosing and repairing any faults which occurred before the cylinder 8 injector circuit malfunction

  • Visually inspecting the fuel injector circuitry and connections

  • Listening to the cylinder 8 injector by holding the tip of a screwdriver to it and listening at the handle in order to check for the clicking sound which indicates normal function

  • Measuring the injector’s voltage and resistance

  • Testing the harness connector terminals

  • Removing the injector to visually assess the fuel spray

Common mistakes when diagnosing the P0282 code

It’s important to check all wiring and connections for damage in order to avoid replacing the injector itself unnecessarily.

How serious is the P0282 code?

It can be tempting to put off having an injector code repaired because the vehicle will still run, however it’s best to have a professional address the problem as soon as possible. When a fuel injector doesn’t function correctly, a chain reaction occurs, causing alterations in the function of the rest of the engine. Over time, further damage to other components may result.

What repairs can fix the P0282 code?

There are a few common repairs that can fix this DTC:

The majority of fuel injector circuit faults are due to damaged connectors or wiring, a faulty injector, or a clogged injector.

Additional comments for consideration regarding the P0282 code

While you may want to have this repair performed by a professional, there are a couple of steps that most home mechanics can attempt in an effort to clear up the problem.

Use a home fuel injector flushing kit, but make sure to follow the instructions closely. You must plug the fuel line in order to prevent the cleaner from traveling back to the fuel tank.

You can also fairly easily listen for the clicking sound which indicates a good fuel injector using the screwdriver method outlined above.

If these solutions don’t fix the problem, consulting an experienced mechanic may be your best bet, as further damage may occur if the injector circuit is allowed to continue to malfunction.
