What the P001D code means

This diagnostic trouble code is an indication that the crankshaft and camshaft signals are out of time by some measure. When this happens the Power Control Module (PCM) stores the P001D trouble code and triggers the Check Engine Light.

What causes the P001D code?

The following are causes for the P001D trouble code:

  • Bad camshaft sensor
  • Bad crankshaft sensor
  • Damaged wires to the camshaft sensor
  • Loose or broken timing chain tensioner
  • Timing belt has jumped a tooth due to wear
  • Time chain worn out
  • A loose or missing harmonic balancer bolt

What are the symptoms of the P001D code?

If the crankshaft and camshaft signals are out of time and the P001D trouble code is present, the driver may experience the engine running poorly after starting, with a lack of power. It is also possible for the car to crank, but not run. The Check Engine Light should be on while these symptoms are present.

How does a mechanic diagnose the P001D code?

First, retrieve the trouble codes and freeze frame data stored on by the Power Control Module (PCM), using the OBD-II scanner. Inspect the wiring and connector for any breaks, shorts, or corrosion. If you have a scope, check the camshaft sensor pattern.

If the camshaft pattern is missing, you may have a bad camshaft sensor. A check of the harmonic balancer (crankshaft pulley) and camshaft gear tone rings should be done as well.

Also, check the timing belt or timing chain for wear that could be causing the chain or belt to be out of time. The timing chain/bolt tensioner should be inspected as well to make sure the timing chain/belt has the proper tension so it will not jump time.

If one or more of these components are damaged, repair as necessary. If all of these timings are in working order, the camshaft sensor will need to be replaced.

Another common mistake is not checking the timing chain/belt for stretching, as this will trigger the P001D code as well.
