How to Replace a Lost or Stolen Car Title in Mississippi

Try as you might, no matter how well you take care of your car title, things can still go wrong. If you have lost or misplaced your car title, or it has been stolen this causes a problem. Your car title is what proves you are the registered owner of the vehicle, and it is necessary should you hope to sell, transfer ownership, or even register your vehicle in another state. Clearly it’s a document you can’t just go without.

The state of Mississippi allows for a few reasons that a duplicate title can be obtained. Here are the requirements as set out by the Mississippi Department of Revenue (DOR).

  • The title has been destroyed
  • The title has been damaged
  • The title has been stolen
  • The title has been mutilated
  • The title is illegible
  • If you never did receive the original car title from your lienholder or the DOR

In order to apply for the duplicate car title, you can do so in person or by mail.

In person

  • Visit your local MS DOR office so you can complete the Application for Replacement Certificate of Title (Form 78-006).

  • Make sure to have the fee included, which is $9.

  • The process typically takes about 14 days.

By mail

  • Follow all of the above steps and mail the information to:

Department of Revenue
Title Bureau
P.O. Box 1383
Jackson, MS 39201

Additional options

There are a few other options to mention, which are the fact you can drop off your payment and application at a Mississippi Tax Collector's Office. As well there is a "Fast Track Title" program, which will process the title within 72 hours. Keep in mind this one is a bit more expensive, as it is $9 plus an additional Fast Track fee of $39. This application can be mailed to:

Mississippi Fast Track Title Program
P.O. Box 22845
Jackson, MS 39225
