How to Register a Car in Minnesota

When moving to the state of Minnesota, you will need to make sure you register your vehicle. In order to get the registration process done, you will have to visit the Minnesota Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS) or mail in your paperwork. Make sure that you get your car registered within 60 days of moving to the area to avoid late fees. When going to the DVS to register your vehicle, here is what you will need to bring with you:

  • The vehicle title with your name on it
  • A driver’s license
  • A completed Application to Title and Registration of a Motor Vehicle
  • The odometer reading on your vehicle
  • A copy of the lease agreement on the car if applicable
  • Car insurance with at least $30,000 bodily injury coverage

If you are a resident of Minnesota and have purchased a vehicle from a dealership, they will usually handle the registration process for you. Be sure to get all of the paperwork from the registration so you can then get a tag for the vehicle.

For residents of Minnesota who have purchased a car from an individual, here are the things they will need to have in order to register the vehicle:

  • The title to the vehicle
  • The completed Application to Title or Register a Motor Vehicle form
  • Your driver’s license
  • The odometer reading from the car
  • Proof of valid car insurance
  • Copy of the lien holder agreement if you are still paying on the vehicle

When going to register your vehicle, you will have to pay a fee to get this process done. Here are the fees that you can expect to pay:

  • There is a filing fee of $10
  • The plates for the vehicle are $6 for the double plate and $4.50 for the single
  • To register a motorcycle you will have to pay $4.50

Before you go in to get your car registered, you will need to make sure that you have an adequate insurance policy. Without a valid insurance policy, you will not be able to register your car. If you have questions about this process, be sure to visit the Minnesota DMV website.
