Disabled Driver Laws and Permits in Ohio

The State of Ohio issues disability license plates and parking placards for people with disabilities, including handicapped parking permits. People who qualify as disabled drivers can obtain these permits and placards.

Summary of disability plates and placards in Ohio

In the State of Ohio, a disability placard is identified by a wheelchair symbol. If you are disabled, you can obtain a placard to hang on your rear view mirror if you are temporarily or permanently disabled, or if you are involved with an organization that provides transportation for disabled persons. You can also get license plate, which replaces an ordinary plate, and identifies you as a person with a disability if you own or lease a vehicle.

If you are visiting Ohio, the state will also recognize your disability plate. Additionally, if you are travelling in other states, they will also recognize your disability permit or plate from the State of Ohio.

Applying

If you are disabled, you can apply for a plate or placard in person or by mail. To apply for a placard, you will have to fill out the Application for Disability Placards (Form BMV 4826) and provide a prescription from your doctor or other health professional. If you are in charge of an organization that transports disabled persons, you will not require a prescription in order for you to do so.

When you apply, you will have to pay $3.50 for your placard. Applications and fees should be sent by mail to:

Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles
P.O. Box 16521
Columbus, OH 43216

Alternatively, you can apply in person at the Ohio deputy registrar’s office in your area. Just bring the appropriate paperwork. To apply in person, visit your local Ohio deputy registrar’s office.

Handicap license plate

For a handicap license plate, you will need to be disabled and also either own or lease your vehicle. You will be required to submit a Health Care Provider Certification of Eligibility for Disability License Plates. You must also include medical certification. Payment will vary.

Permits will expire, and will have to be renewed. Permanent placards are valid for the time period indicated by your doctor on the application form. License plates are good for as long as your vehicle is registered. To renew a placard, you must reapply. Plates are also renewed along with your ordinary vehicle registration.

Lost or stolen permits or plates

If you lose your permit or plate, you can have it replaced. You will not have to have a new prescription.

As a resident of Ohio who has a disability, you are entitled to certain rights and privileges. Keep in mind though, that these rights and privileges must be applied for. They are not given automatically. You are not flagged by the Ohio DOT as a person with a disability unless you tell them that you have a disability, so in order to enjoy your rights, you must fill out the appropriate paperwork.
