A Buyer’s Guide to the 2012 Mitsubishi Outlander

The smaller size and aggressive styling make the 2012 Mitsubishi Outlander a great choice for those who want an SUV, but don’t want to deal with some of the large behemoths available. With numerous tech options and all-wheel drive available, customization for each driver is simple.

Key Features

This Outlander delivers plenty of cargo space in the base model, as well as a four-cylinder engine that provides adequate performance. For those who need more, third row seating and a more powerful V6 are available.

Changes for 2012

The 2012 Mitsubishi Outlander received an ECO light. This indicator light shows drivers when the SUV is operating at peak efficiency. Additionally, a backup camera was added to the Touring and Premium packages.

What We Like

The overall handling provided by the brakes and steering coupled with the sport tuned suspension provide a comfortable, albeit somewhat stiff, ride. With added features such as Voice Recognition that keeps hands on the wheel and a flap-fold bumper that folds so that it is level to the bumper, there are plenty of options available to make this SUV work for your needs.

What Concerns Us

While the fuel economy is decent, there are other options available in this class that are more fuel efficient. The ride is also a bit unforgiving due to the tighter suspension.

Available Models

There are three models available for the 2012 Mitsubishi Outlander:

ES and SE

  • 2.4-Liter Inline-4
  • 168 horsepower @ 6,000 rpm
  • 167 lb-ft of torque @ 4,100 rpm
  • City/highway fuel economy: 22/27 mpg (AWD), 23/28 mpg (FWD)

GT

  • 3.0-Liter V6
  • 230 horsepower @ 6,250 rpm
  • 215 lb-ft of torque @ 3,750 rpm
  • City/highway fuel economy: 19/25 mpg (AWD), 19/26 mpg (FWD)

Major Recalls

There has been one recall issued for the 2012 Mitsubishi Outlander. In models that have had replacement automatic six-speed transmission installed during servicing there is a lack of clearance between the converter housing and power steering pressure tube. This could allow contact between the two components, leading to a power steering fluid leak. If this occurs, it could result in sudden loss of power steering.

Common Issues

The most common issues reported on the Outlander is due to visor screws that are not tight enough or completely loose. This allows the visor on both the driver and passenger side to detach without warning.

Another complaint was due to snow building up around and in the rims, resulting in significant shaking while driving.
