It may not be the most well-known, flashiest Land Rover but the LR2 holds its own as a capable, attractive, AWD rugged SUV with the signature boxy British look and interior that bathes you in luxury. As the most petite of the LR line – and the one with the smallest price tag – this five-passenger cutie will take you over the river and through the woods just as well as many of its counterparts.
Key Features
The Terrain Management system makes navigating a variety of surfaces as simple as turning a dial – literally. The icons tell you where to point the control knob for whatever terrain may come your way. The Hill Descent Control offers added security when going down a steep decline. The LR2 is no slouch on safety, with traction and stability systems in spades. Changes for 2012 The LR2 received a seat design overhaul and a restyling of the instrument panel for model year 2012.
What We Like
Full-time AWD is obviously a huge draw, and the leather seat surfaces, panoramic sunroof, 9-speaker Alpine audio system, and dual zone climate control don’t hurt matters either. The cargo area is generous at 58.9 cubic feet and the tailgate opens nice and wide for easy loading.
What Concerns Us
There aren’t as many tech features as competing models by Audi and BMW, and the lack of low-range gearing means serious off-road devotees may have to turn elsewhere for their true all-terrain experience. If you’re on the shorter side, that wide-opening tailgate can be a bugger to reach when it’s time to close it. The fuel economy is also considerably poorer than some of the compact SUV’s competitors.
Available Models
While the LR2 comes in three available trims, LR2, HSE, and HSE Lux, they all sport the same engine configuration: 3.2L in-line 6-cylinder 6-speed automatic with 234 lb.-ft. torque, 230 HP, and 15/22 mpg
Major Recalls
In January of 2013 Jaguar recalled the LR2 due to improperly tightened brake calipers. This problem could affect braking capability as well as potentially allow the caliper to puncture a tire. The company issued notices to owners along with advising them to have it fixed, free of charge.
In August 2014 the company issued a recall for an electronics problem that could affect the passenger’s airbag deployment. The company notified owners and offered free repair of the problem.
