SUVs represent one out of every three vehicles sold in 2012, making them one of the most-purchased types of vehicles in the country during that time period. Compact SUVs are a sub-class that are slightly smaller and offer the most affordable form-factors – the SUV look that you love while the costs and stats are more similar to a car than a truck or SUV.
There is a seemingly-endless array of options for an SUV, so paring down to just these two contenders was challenging to say the least. These vehicles are used by the new parents – the ones who are ready for something larger that fits a car seat easily, but will still look and feel sporty when they’re hauling around their little darlings. SUVs are more flexible in bad weather, have more space and especially greater visibility, making them the go-to choice for younger families.
Engine & Performance
The six-speed automatic transmission is basically a given in this class, however the addition of turbo-charged engines in the Escape gives it a wholly different feel than the CR-V – which just can’t compete with its 2.4L four-cylinder engine. The CR-V offers only a few limited add-ons, while the Ford Escape offers any number of a range of options from drive train to all wheel drive.
Interior Dimensions
While nearly the same size externally, the Escape is just slightly wider and taller, but Honda pulls a trick and is able to rearrange the space so that the interior feels much larger than the interior. Rear-facing infant seats are much easier to handle in the CR-V, as there’s not much space left in between the child and the seat once installation of a car seat is completed. Cargo volume in the Honda offering is significantly larger as well.
Energy Efficiency
The power and energy compromise for these particular models is excellent for the class, but the Escape’s ratings are slightly lower than the CR-V’s 22 city/30 highway mpg as stated; mileage will almost certainly vary with the introduction of the Escape’s turbocharged engine. The Focus’s response, speed, and drivability make it the perfect tool for enjoying the performance. Either option in this smaller SUV class is a pleasure to drive, but the Honda is a slightly better choice on paper but that may suffer in person.
