Wheel Bearings Replacement Service & Cost

What are the Wheel Bearings all about?

Wheel bearings enable wheels on a car to spin freely and stay secured to the car. Cars have four wheel bearings, one located at each wheel. If the wheel bearings wear out, you will feel the wheels and steering wheel shake. Do not drive the car in this condition and have it checked out as soon as possible by a professional mechanic.

Keep in mind:

There are two kinds of wheel bearing designs: 1) the bearings can be serviced by taking them apart, cleaning them, and re-packing them with fresh grease, or 2) the wheel bearing is of a “sealed” design that requires no service other than replacement when found to be defective.

How it's done:

  • Verify faulty component.
  • Remove/replace the wheel bearing.
  • Torque wheel bearing, fasteners, and wheels to factory specifications.
  • Inspect suspension and steering systems for any worn or damaged components.
  • Test drive vehicle.

Our recommendation:

On most cars manufactured before 1997, there are two wheel bearings per front tire (1 inner and 1 outer). Most car manufacturers recommend wheel bearing cleaning, re-packing with grease, and having them inspected every 30,000 miles. This is normally done with a brake service. Most cars manufactured after 1998 come with one wheel bearing in each tire, called a hub and bearing assembly. This is a sealed unit and cannot be serviced. When the wheel bearings go bad, they are simply removed and replaced with new ones.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Wheel Bearings?

  • Grinding, squealing, or abnormal noise from tires when you drive.
  • Steering wheel shakes when you drive the car.
  • If wheel bearing is locked up, the wheel will not easily move forward.

How important is this service?

Wheel bearings allow the wheels to spin freely and at the desired speed. They’re also responsible for keeping the wheels attached to the vehicle. As the bearings begin to wear out or become damaged, they impact the wheels ability to spin smoothly, freely, and securely. When this happens your vehicle will become shaky, and your wheels will not be secure.

Dan

Dan was great. He arrived exactly on time and finished up the work in a couple of hours while I worked at the office. He was extremely friendly and professional even when there was an issue with the office landlord. My car is driving great now and YourMechanic.com via Dan was able to do the work for literally hundreds less than what any shop had quoted me. Once you add in the fact that it all took place at my office building and I didn't have to take time off or out of my weekend to get it taken care of and you've got a real winner. I'll be making sure to check YouMechanic.com for quotes first

Tom

Tom came to replace my rear wheel bearing on my bmw, thought it would be somewhat of a easy job, but let me tell you it was a major pain, the hub was ceased onto the bearing and the rear axle was kind of stuck on the hub, let me tell you tom was amazing, the was suppose to be about 1.7 hours, I think he was there about 5hrs and determined to repair my car. Tom was great and will definitely use him again.

Robert
37 years of experience
I went to a local store for a national auto repair chain that diagnosed a problem with my rear shocks when I was having tires installed. The quote was $400 so I told them to hold off knowing I would get a second opinion on what was causing a lot of road noise. i found your mechanic and the quote was left than half! So I booked an appointment. Robert called 30 minuets prior and showed up right on time. He inspected my car and he told me there was nothing wrong with my shocks and that the wheel bearings were the problem. There was no charge for the shocks and the $70 labor charge was credited to the real repair performed the following day. Now my car sounds like it is supposed to! great job, fair pricing and the work was done right at my office saving me time and money and no missed work. I will call on him and your mechanic anytime I need service.
