I apologize for taking so long to write this review. Whitney is definitely my mechanic from now on. He arrived on time at my condo parking lot, he diagnose the car to see if everything I requested needed to be changed, and in fact, I did not need to change everything (my AC was not working and I've got very high estimates to fix it). While taking the engine apart, he noticed a leak on the water pump, so since it was Sunday and the shop did not deliver the parts, he actually went to pick them up himself. When done, he performed another thorough check of the whole car. I am really very pleased with his work and will call him over and over again and definitely recommend him to everyone I know. Thanks Whitney!

After trying for several weeks to find an honest, reputable car repair service in Sacramento - (to no avail) I happened upon YourMechanic, and found the premise very interesting. After going through the initial estimate process, I chose Kevin, who had very good reviews, and was ASE Certified. I must confess that I had fallen way behind in my annual maintenance, which probably added to the demise of my Ford Ranger water pump, among other things. When I met Kevin he was very personable, and came across as knowledgeable about all types of auto repair, with 26 years of experience. Being a fan of ultimate car restoration shows on TV, I was impressed when Kevin said he had done work for collectors, who are among the most picky of car owners. He also said he had to study hard lately to become certified in Hybrid repair, as they are now beyond original warranty - and will be in need of attention. I am old-school - rear-wheel drive, with gas-fueled v-8’s - still lamenting I ever sold by 57 Chev Bel-Air hardtop years ago. Hybrids are way beyond my comprehension. My badly-damaged water pump was a struggle for Kevin to remove, yet he dug in without complaining and got all faulty parts removed. It was at this point I made him a promise that I would get on top of all neglected maintenance - with his guidance - and become friends with my truck again. After all, it is paid for, has a 4-cyl engine that sounds great, and looks good for a 2001. Why trade-in when I have never had a good relationship with an auto dealer. Final insult - my 2-year-old battery had died, so Kevin helped me jump start, and I made a beeline to Wal-Mart where they installed a new battery, and rotated my tires. The Ranger ran great and I was already feeling better about life in general. Kevin even gave me a call-back the next day, to see how everything went, and if I saw any leaks or problems. That was Class, and he passed with flying colors. Kevin saved my Ranger from the junkyard, and with my oft-used laptop - I even went to Ford online where I registered as an Owner, and found 4 PDF files to download on Original Factory Manuals, which I could not find in an earlier search. I printed out a maintenance schedule all the way from 60,000 miles to the present 112,000, to let me know where I had gone wrong. My next replacement is going to be Timing Belt, which is now due - so I am living up to my promise. Note to all car owners with vehicles a few years old: Maintenance is highly important and stuff you can’t see is wearing out daily - so be good to your Baby! Thanks to Kevin, my new Go-To Mechanic - a very hard-working Dude. YourMechanic will hear from me as soon as I get a few more bucks ready for the RedRanger slush fund. Thanks - YourMechanic!

Water Pump Replacement Service

What is a water pump and how does it work?

The water pump is a belt or chain-driven engine accessory bolted to the engine above the crankshaft pulley. The pump housing has an impeller that circulates engine coolant through the cooling system passageways in the engine block and cylinder head, on to the radiator, where the coolant temperature is reduced. . The lower temperature coolant then flows back to the water inlet on the engine and the water pump continues the cycle.

When to consider replacing the water pump:

  • Coolant leaks or overheating. The water pump impeller shaft is supported by a bearing. Eventually, the bearing or seal can wear and leak or damage the impeller. Many water pumps have weep holes near the pump bearing. If you see significant leakage from that weep hole, it is time to replace the pump.
  • Bearing roughness or noise. If the water pump shaft does not turn smoothly or the pump is noisy, the bearing is excessively worn. Pump replacement will be necessary.
  • Timing belt replacement. In engines where the water pump is driven by the timing belt, it is a good idea to replace the water pump at the same time the timing belt is replaced. The extensive work explains why it is always recommended to replace the water pump whenever the mechanic already has these components removed for regularly scheduled timing belt replacement.

How do mechanics replace the water pump?

  • The water pump is usually bolted to the front of the engine. The replacement procedure will vary depending on whether the pump is driven by the timing belt, the serpentine belt, or chain.
  • On a cold engine, the engine coolant is drained to a level below the water pump.
  • Components that require removing to access the water pump are removed, including the belt or chain that directly drive the pump.
  • The bolts holding the pump to the engine are removed and the pump is pulled out.
  • The gasket surface must be cleaned and the pump mounting surface inspected. A new gasket, rubber seal, or RTV sealant, as required, is installed and then the new pump. The bolts are torqued in sequence using a calibrated inch pound torque wrench.
  • For applications where the water pump is driven by the timing belt, the timing belt must be removed. Typically, this requires removal of the crankshaft pulley, timing belt covers, and timing belt tensioner. Once the new pump is installed, new coolant is added back while bleeding the cooling system of any air. The engine is then run and brought to normal operating temperature to check for leaks and ensure normal operating temperature.

Is it safe to drive with a water pump problem?

No. Should the water pump only leak a little bit, you can drive the car. However, a small leak could suddenly enlarge or the pump bearing might unexpectedly seize. Either circumstance would likely cause engine overheating. If a defective water pump causes the overheating, it is not safe to drive because of the damage to the engine.

When replacing the water pump keep in mind:

  • It is best to install a new cooling system thermostat when you install a new water pump, especially if the thermostat is old or original.
  • Completely flushing the cooling system is a good idea when you replace the water pump. Flushing can be done before or after pump replacement.
  • The rest of the cooling system should be inspected too — particularly rubber hoses, which have a limited lifetime.
