Tension Rod Replacement Service

What is the Tension Rod all about?

Tension rods are used in coil spring front suspension systems. They hold the front wheels in place, preventing longitudinal motion. One end of the tension rod runs from the chassis to the wheel area on each side of the car. The chassis end is mounted to the frame with a bushing and a bolt. The other end is bolted firmly in place on the control arm or wheel knuckle. If the tension rod is bent, broken, or if the bushing is loose, the caster alignment angle will be inaccurate and excessive tire wear will occur quickly. The steering may feel different, and you may experience a clunking or banging noise.

Keep in mind:

  • A wheel alignment should be performed by a front end shop after any suspension work is performed, including a tension rod repair or replacement.

Our recommendation:

The tension rod will only need to be replaced in the event of physical damage, and its chassis bushing may need to be replaced if weathering or wearing causes excessive play. If your vehicle exhibits any of the related symptoms, have your car diagnosed by one of our expert mechanics.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Tension Rod?

  • Excessive wear on your front tires
  • Metal clanking around the perimeter of your chassis

How important is this service?

Though imminent failure is not a concern, excessive play or damage to the tension rod can cause more expensive repairs such as tire replacement, and may cause extra strain on the rest of your suspension. Have a damaged or worn tension rod replaced fairly quickly.
