Oil Filter Housing Gasket Replacement Service

What is the Oil Filter Housing Gasket all about?

Oil is vital for a running engine; it must have the right viscosity and be changed on a regular basis. As the oil passes through your engine, it picks up debris and particles. If left unchecked, the debris will cause serious damage to your engine. The solution is an oil filter – it does exactly what the name implies: it filters the oil and removes particulates before they have a chance to damage engine components.

Depending on the make and model you drive, you may have an internal or an external oil filter. External filters are the most common in the US, and are primarily used on American cars and Asian imports. However, many European imports use internal filters. External filters are mounted under the engine, located near the front of the bottom. Most internal filters are installed into a sealed housing at the top of the engine.

Both external and internal filters attach to the housing, which mounts to the engine and requires a gasket to keep engine oil from leaking out around it. Over time, this gasket will become brittle and crack, allowing oil to leak out.

Keep in mind:

  • Oil filter housing gasket leaks can and should be caught during basic maintenance.
  • It may require some diagnosis to determine if the leak comes from the filter housing gasket, or from another area of the engine.
  • All gaskets will eventually break down and wear out, so replacement is a possibility for all vehicles.

How it's done:

  • The vehicle is lifted and supported on jack stands oil and filter are removed
  • The defective oil filter housing gasket is removed
  • The new oil filter housing gasket is installed
  • The vehicle is removed from jack stands
  • The vehicle is started and checked for oil leaks and filter operation

Our recommendation:

Ensuring that oil leaks are repaired is critical for your engine to operate smoothly. Work with one of our expert mechanics to monitor oil leaks and provide sound advice and guidance on when they should be addressed.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Oil Filter Housing Gasket?

  • Oil dripping from the oil filter on an external, bottom mounted filter
  • Oil leaking around the intake manifold on a top mounted, internal oil filter

How important is this service?

Given the importance of the oil filter to the operation and health of your engine, replacing a failed oil filter housing gasket is vital. Even a minor leak can pose a serious threat quickly.

Everything was great. My mechanic was super quick, finished within an hour. The whole experience was convenient and I paid only half of what a body shop quoted me.

I was a little skeptical at first having never used this type of service before. But now I can't say enough good things. He was on time and very knowledgeable. He had zero issues and obviously knew his way around the BMW which made me feel comfortable. The overall experience was great and I enjoyed the personal aspect rather than just dropping the vehicle off and hanging out in a waiting room. Job well done!! If I come across a repair that is a little over my head and/ or just don't have the time to do, I would def consider Emmette.

I was very skeptical at first. I had got online to see if the repair was something I could do. I got a pop up window with your website. In most cases I would of just closed the window. But I didn't. I did go into the website and went ahead and put in my car information and what I needed to have done. It gave me a quote. It then asked if I wanted to book the appointment. I clicked yes. When it asked for me credit card info. I stopped. I figured this has to be a scam. So I did some research and after a couple of days of going back on your website. I went ahead and did confirm my appointment. I immediately received a conformation and who the mechanic would be. Frank, the mechanic showed up on time and repaired my gasket that needed to be replaced. He did a very good job. He did show me the parts that were replaced and then gave me a couple of recommendations that I might want to do. It was quick and painless. I will use again. AWSOME JOB !!!! Forgot to mention. I was originally going to take my Ford over to tireplus and have thework completed. They wanteda total of $302.00 to repair. Yourmechanic got it done for $ 163.00. I do appreciate the great job. I also appreciate that there was no mess left behind. Frank you rock....

I've had difficulty in writing this review. Angelo was great. Your Mechanic as a company was not. Ultimately, parts were missing from the quote, things were forgotten, I was mischarged, prices went up, and a variety of issues that required email after email and phone call after phone call to resolve and I ultimately paid more than I was quoted initially. That said, Angelo was timely, courteous, and knowledgeable. The job required maybe 5 times as much time as was quoted (partly due things not having been written up correctly by the quote department so he didn't have everything he needed) and he hung in there until things were complete, staying into the evening. He was also kind enough to look at another car and make recommendations there. Your Mechanic is so very close to being this amazing service that will mean I never go back to another garage. With the recent across the board price increases that a rep told me they made, I'll have to be vigilant in getting multiple quotes. But if they stay mostly below garage prices and add in the massive convenience of a mechanic coming to you, I think they have a real winning formula. They just need to iron out the kinks. I'll likely try them again, but if it takes a half dozen emails and multiple phone calls again, I doubt I'll give them a third try.
