Manual Position Sensor Replacement Service

What is the Manual Position Sensor all about?

The manual position sensor, or manual lever position sensor, is part of an automatic transmission. You won’t find these sensors on vehicles with manual transmissions. The sensor is responsible for a number of different responsibilities. You might be more familiar with this sensor by other names including inhibitor switch, neutral safety switch, and transmission range sensor.

Originally, the switch only ensured that your car was in Neutral or Park, and activated the backup lights. However, as transmissions have become increasingly complex and sophisticated, the manual position sensor has taken on many new roles, such as activating when the torque converter engages, identifying the proper gear for the transmission at any given time, etc. While the sensor is responsible for transmission operation, it’s not part of the transmission itself. It mounts outside the transmission and connects to the vehicle’s wiring harness. If the manual position sensor fails, you’ll experience certain problems, including an active Check Engine light, incorrect transmission operation, and more.

Keep in mind:

  • The manual position sensor is an electronic component, and as such is subject to a number of problems including wiring harness damage and electrical shorts.
  • Exposure to high heat in the engine compartment will lead to damage or failure over the long term.
  • The manual position sensor is not inspected during any normal maintenance service.

Our recommendation:

The manual position sensor is a critical component of vehicle operation, without it, driving is nearly impossible. If you experiencing erratic shifts, or your Check Engine light comes on, we recommend having the problem diagnosed by one of our expert mechanics immediately.
