Idle Switch Replacement Service

What is the Idle Switch all about?

The idle switch is part of the throttle position sensor that determines when the throttle is fully closed. The value it reads is reported to the engine control module, and when the throttle is closed, the idle air control motor is enabled to ensure that your vehicle will idle smoothly. It does this by controlling the amount of air that goes to the engine. If the idle switch fails, it can cause changes in the RPM of your engine that can adversely affect its life and performance.

Keep in mind:

  • Idle switch replacement is not a part of routine maintenance.
  • Other issues, such as poor fuel quality or tune-up needs, can cause problems with the way your car idles.

Our recommendation:

If your Check Engine light comes on and stays on, this could indicate a problem with the idle control. When this happens, have one of our expert mechanics run proper computer diagnostics on your car engine and identify the source of the problem. You should never ignore an idling problem.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Idle Switch?
