Heater Tubes Replacement Service

What is the Heater Tubes all about?

Your heater core is located in your car’s dashboard. It’s a small radiator-style component used to dissipate heat. It is used to heat your vehicle’s cabin, and it’s also part of your car’s cooling system. The heater tubes run from the cooling system under the hood, where the water pump circulates the coolant, and into the heater box inside your car to the heater core. If these tubes become clogged, your heater core won’t work the way it should, because the coolant can’t get through the core. You will likely get very little heat from your car heater if the heater tubes are plugged, or a puddle of coolant on the passenger front floor if the heater tubes are leaking.

Keep in mind:

  • Heater tube replacement is not part of your routine maintenance.
  • Dirt and other contaminants can build up in the heater tubes.
  • Leakage in the heater core can result in corrosion, leading to the core rupturing.

Our recommendation:

If you have clogged heater tubes, and the core ruptures, coolant could spray into the passenger cabin, accompanied by white smoke. This can present a driving hazard. Much of the dashboard will likely have to be removed to replace heater tubes. If you suspect that your heater tubes have become clogged, have one of our expert mechanics diagnose your system.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Heater Tubes?

  • Smell of engine coolant (sickly sweet smell)
  • Wetness around the passenger side floor

How important is this service?

Because of the danger of coolant and smoke in the passenger compartment, you should have one of our expert mechanics diagnose it as quickly as possible. This is not a problem that will go away on its own. The problem could be clogged heater tubes, or something else in the car cooling system.
