Hall Effect Switch Replacement Service

What is the Hall Effect Switch all about?

The Hall Effect switch works to fire the coil in your engine and monitor your engine’s RPM. They are also used in distributor-less car ignition systems, in order to determine the position of the camshaft and the crankshaft. When your engine is cranked, it needs to know immediately where the “number one” cylinder is so that the ignition module can fire the spark plugs in the proper sequence. In a fuel-injected engine, it also works to time the injectors properly. The injectors deliver a constant voltage signal that can go from maximum to practically zero, and then back, regardless of the engine speed. This is how your vehicle’s onboard computer gets the information that it needs to regulate the engine timing.

Keep in mind:

  • If your engine isn’t firing properly, your fuel economy is going to suffer.
  • Improper engine timing will result in damage to engine components in the long run.
  • If your engine isn’t firing the way it should, the problem may not be the Hall Effect switch – it could be dirty injectors, fouled spark plugs, a bad timing belt, or something else.

Our recommendation:

You should be alert to anything in the motor compartment that sounds abnormal. Missing and sputtering could be due to bad spark plugs, clogged injectors, or a faulty Hall Effect switch. Have one of our expert mechanics diagnose your engine problems and recommend a course of action.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Hall Effect Switch?
