Front Output Shaft Oil Seal Replacement Service

What is the Front Output Shaft Oil Seal all about?

The front output shaft oil seal is a circular type of gasket that prevents transfer case oil from leaking out around your oil shaft. It is used on all-wheel drive and four-wheel drive vehicles. The driveshaft that goes to the front differential has a slip yoke that goes on the output shaft from the transfer case, and it needs to be sealed to prevent fluid escaping. The gasket is pressed onto the transfer case to complete the seal. The front output shaft oil seal can leak due to wear over time, or the seal can be nicked from dirt and debris that can get stuck to the drive shaft slip yoke.

Keep in mind:

  • Front output shaft oil seal replacement is not part of your routine maintenance.
  • Transmission oil leakage does not necessarily mean that the output shaft seal is damaged – it could be due to a worn out bearing or another problem in the transmission.
  • Output shaft seals, like other seals in your vehicle, are vulnerable to wear.

How it's done:

  • The front output shaft oil seal is verified to see if it needs to be replaced
  • The defective front output shaft oil seal is removed
  • The new front output shaft oil seal are installed
  • The front output shaft oil seal is tested for operation and leaks
  • The vehicle is tested to ensure proper operation of the front output shaft oil seal

Our recommendation:

The front output shaft seal is only replaced as needed since there is no set interval for maintenance or repair. If you suspect the output shaft seal is leaking, have it diagnosed by one of our expert mechanics.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Front Output Shaft Oil Seal?

  • Pinkish fluid leaking around the driveshaft
