Emergency/Parking Brake Cable Replacement Service

What is the Emergency/Parking Brake Cable all about?

The parking brake cable is a thin, steel cable that connects the parking brake lever to the parking brake shoes. It is located underneath the car. When you pull the lever, this cable enables the parking brake shoes to press against the rotor or the drum, creating the friction that keeps the car from rolling. It is just like using the brake pedal, but in this case, you are using the parking brake cable instead of brake fluids to apply the pressure. Over time the cable can rust and break. If the parking brake cable is broken, the car will roll even when the parking brake has been engaged.

Keep in mind:

The brake drums or pads often need to be removed to access the emergency brake cable. During this time, the drums and pads should be inspected to see if they also need to be replaced.

How it's done:

  • Remove and replace parking brake cable.
  • Adjust parking brake.
  • Test parking brake.

Our recommendation:

Always apply the parking brake when the car is parked. This will keep the parking brake adjusted properly. Your mechanic should inspect the parking brake cable during every brake service. They should also periodically spray rust penetrant chemical on the cable to prevent rust from building up.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Emergency/Parking Brake Cable?

  • Parking brake does not hold car.
  • Parking brake does not release.
  • Parking brake warning light is on.

How important is this service?

All services associated with proper function of your brakes are important. In addition to safety issues, ignoring small repairs can quickly lead to more serious (and more expensive) problems.

While I was very pleased with Joe & his knowledge, I rated today's work as a 3 out of 5 for the following two reasons: 1) I was only quoted (I think) for one EBrake Cable to the rear Passenger side. He said he would have to re-quote the Service Job (and then I would need to make a second appointment to complete the job ) to come back out and install the Driver-side Cable...and then my EBrake would work! Did I pay for both Cables but he was only given the Passenger:-side Csble? Help!!! 2) Joe installed the Passenger-side Cable, but now that rear brake area seems to be locked & the car is hard to move/drive...as if that Cable and/or the rear Calipher is frozen in the brake position. Please help me understand want is going on. I would give Joe a 5 for his work and knowledge; but a 3 to his support/technical staff for not knowing that my car has TWO rear EBrake Cables (LT & RT rear),and that by installing just the RT side would interfere with the ease of driving until the Driver-side Cable is fixed. thanks! John was able to get my car done the same day even though the wrong part was ordered. I am thankful for that and not having to take time more time off.

Michael was great! Kept me updated about everything he was doing, ran into several setbacks due to the condition of my car but just kept on going and still finished before the estimated 3 hour window. I'd request him again if I wasn't moving out of town.

Joshua was very professional, prompt and knowledgable. When making my appointment I incorrectly diagnosed the issue my SUV was experiencing and even though Joshua did not have the required parts (due to my error), he found them locally and was able to complete the needed repair during the original appointment. I was so impressed with him that we booked a new appointment in a cancellation spot he had immediately on his scheduled and I had him diagnose and illusive issue on another vehicle. Now I have an appointment to have that issue remediated by Joshua later this month
