Clutch Pressure Reservoir Replacement Service

What is the Clutch Pressure Reservoir all about?

Your clutch operates on hydraulic pressure. The clutch fluid is contained in a reservoir in the engine compartment that is connected to the clutch pedal in the car. When the clutch pedal is pressed, the fluid activates a clutch release on the manual transmission, allowing the clutch plate to freewheel. If the clutch pressure reservoir is leaking, plugged or has a bad internal seal, the clutch pedal will not operate smoothly.

Keep in mind:

  • Assessing the condition of your clutch fluid reservoir is not part of routine maintenance, but if you suspect a leak, most mechanics will, if asked, check the fluid level when you bring your car into be serviced.
  • Don’t assume that if you’re leaking clutch fluid the reservoir is at fault – it’s actually more likely to be a leaky master cylinder or slave cylinder.

How it's done:

  • The battery is disconnected
  • The old clutch pressure reservoir is removed
  • The new clutch pressure reservoir is installed
  • The vehicle battery is reconnected
  • The vehicle is road tested and checked for proper clutch operation
