Carbon Throttle Body Service

What to Expect:

Engines rely on a perfect combination of air and fuel in order to run smoothly and efficiently. The air in the fuel-air equation is controlled by the air intake. The throttle body is the part of the air intake that regulates the airflow, and manages how much air combines with the fuel. Over time, the throttle body can accumulate carbon deposits, which impacts the efficiency of the throttle body.

Keep in mind:

  • When cleaning the carbon from the throttle body, the entire throttle body system should be inspected.
  • The air intake duct should be checked for cracks, as that may be what is causing the carbon buildup.

How it's done:

  • Take the snorkle off the throttle body
  • Spray brake cleaner on the throttle plate
  • Scrub plate with a brush
  • Spray the brake cleaner again
  • Reconnect snorkle

Our recommendation:

The air intake system should be inspected during all routine servicing and maintenance, and the throttle body should be serviced every 30,000 miles.

What are the common symptoms indicating you need to replace the Carbon Throttle Body?

  • Racing noise from the engine

How important is this service?

Your air intake system is responsible for making sure that your engine gets the perfect combination of air and fuel. The system draws air from outside of the vehicle, mixes it with fuel, and sends it to the engine. The throttle body is a part of the air intake system that manages exactly how much air enters that equation. When the throttle body gets carbon buildup in it, it does its job less efficiently, and your engine won’t run as well. More importantly, the carbon deposits in the throttle body can follow the air into the engine, where they become harmful contaminants that can damage your engine.
