Canister Vent Valve Replacement Service

What is the Canister Vent Valve all about?

The purpose of the canister vent valve, also called simply the vent valve, is to control the flow of air into and out of the Evaporative Emission Control (EVAP) system, a feature on all modern cars. The EVAP system collects and stores fuel vapors in a charcoal canister. When they reach a certain level, these vapors are routed via the vent valve solenoid to the engine and burned in the combustion chamber while the vehicle is running. This way, the EVAP system allows modern vehicles to run cleaner and cuts down on vehicle emissions.

You can find the canister vent valve attached to the charcoal canister, which is attached to or in the general area of the fuel tank.

Keep in mind:

  • In some cases, the vent valve becomes clogged with dirt and other debris. This is due to its location on the underside of the vehicle. One of our expert mechanics will check to make sure this is not the case when inspecting the canister vent valve.
  • If the valve is clogged, the mechanic will either clean the part or replace it, as well as determine what caused it to become clogged in the first place.
  • Sometimes the vent valve gets stuck open. This, in turn, causes the Check Engine light to come on. One of our expert mechanics will run a diagnostic when this happens and either fix the current vent valve or replace it if necessary.

Our recommendation:

If you notice it is hard to fill your fuel tank, chances are the canister vent valve is clogged. Another way to detect a faulty vent valve is higher-than-normal emissions when getting a smog check. When you encounter engine problems related to a faulty canister vent valve, have one of our expert mechanics run a diagnostic to determine the problem. The mechanic will then recommend what needs to be done to fix the problem.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Canister Vent Valve?

  • Check Engine light is on
  • Fuel tank is hard to fill
  • Car stalls
  • Car does not pass the emissions test
  • Engine sputters when trying to start

How important is this service?

Making sure the canister vent valve on your vehicle works properly is especially important, because failing to do so can have a detrimental impact on the proper functioning of the vehicle and lead to a less effective EVAP system on the vehicle. Most often, failing to fix a problem with the vent valve can lead to failure of any sort of emissions testing, such as a smog check.
