After having my car sit in my garage for a month with a dead alternator, I found yourmechanic.com, and more specifically, Nathan Thorne. YourMechanic.com's website was super easy to use, they already had the repair I needed in their system, gave me an exact quote, and let me pick when the repair was going to happen. Now the best part. When the mechanic came out, he determined that the repair was going to take significantly longer than they had quoted...AND DIDN'T UPCHARGE ME. He just did the repair and said since the company's quote on the time for the repair was wrong, he would just deal with them. Couldn't have asked for better service and will definitely recommend and use Nathan Thorne again.

This is my first experience with YourMechanic.com. Although I realize that it all depends on the mechanic that actually comes to your place, I was very lucky. Christopher arrived on time (on a Sunday morning!) and immediately proceeded to change my dead alternator. He was friendly, professional and gave me a lot of infos on what he was doing and on the general condition of my car. Couple that with the fact that I saved roughly around 200$ compared to a car shop and it is not hard to see why I am enthusiastic about this service and about Christopher. See you next time!

Rod showed up on time and began working on my car immediately. He was courteous, professional, and very knowledgeable in what he did. So knowledgeable that he knew a work around and turned an estimated 3 1/2 hour job into just under 2 hours. What!!?? Now that's the type of workmanship I can fully support moving forward. My days of taking my car to the mechanic shop are over. No more waiting for my car to be serviced due to the "first come, first serve" nonsense. Not to mention if the shop gets backed up your car can be held for an extra day. Yup, had that happen to me more than once. This service is a life saver big time. They come to you, focus on your car only, and have you up and running in a more precise time frame. Getting back to Rod, he even spotted some areas in my front suspension system that needs attention. He's right because it's an issue that has been plaguing my car for some time now but I've been unable to find the problem on my own. I definitely recommend to anyone who's on the fence or are tired of being burned by another repair shop to give Your Mechanic a try. I am extremely happy with the results and workmanship and book Rod if you can. Thanks again Rod.

Alternator Repair Service

How does an alternator help your car run?

The alternator is the component that charges the battery in your car. When you use electrical components in your car (stereo, lights, etc.), the battery loses power. The alternator recharges the battery, replenishing the lost battery power. The alternator is located in the engine compartment. If the alternator is not working properly, your car will only stay running for as long as the battery has power stored. Once the battery loses power, your car will not start. Normally, a malfunctioning alternator will turn on the battery warning light or will have a low volt gauge reading.

Alternator

Before repairing the alternator:

The mechanic should check the entire charging system before installing a new alternator, including checking battery cables for corrosion and the condition of the battery.

Steps when replacing an alternator:

  • Inspect entire charging system (battery, cables, alternator).
  • Inspect the drive belts.
  • Test alternator output.
  • Remove and replace alternator if found to be faulty.
  • Re-test alternator output.

Our recommendation for alternator replacements:

Ask your mechanic to inspect the condition of the charging system during every major service. The mechanic should also clean and tighten the battery cables during every major service.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Alternator?

  • Dead battery or battery will not hold a charge.
  • Dim lights.
  • Battery warning light is on.

Why repairing your alternator is important:

Your alternator charges your battery, which powers the electronics in your vehicle, such as the radio and the air conditioning. The battery is also needed to turn on your vehicle. A malfunctioning alternator will not charge your car’s battery, and your vehicle will eventually run out of battery life and not be able to start.
