Great service and feedback - provided a very detailed and comprehensive analysis of the vehicle and identified items of immediate action versus what can wait as far as servicing! I would highly recommend Richard to anyone and will use him for future servicing for my vehicle!
Richard arrived early, was very pleasant and professional, and finished the job (replacing my alternator) a lot quicker than the estimated time. He also checked my vehicle and recommended other problems that needed to be fixed and left a quote for those issues. I am extremely pleased with the service I received and I will recommend Richard and YourMechanic.com to others.

Theordore is a great mechanic. I have a 2007 Commander that is beginning to have issues after 120,000 miles. I live in a big city and dont have a trustworthy mechanic. After googling issues, I thought I only needed a serpentine belt, so I made the appointment for that and it turned out to be a whole new alternator. Every time he found an issue, he would explain what was going on and also show me, or try to get me to listen to the issue, in order to assure me he was being honest. On the flip side, there were parts I thought might be bad, and he would let me know they were fine. He was honest about how much life I could get out of parts before needing to replace them, instead of attempting to upsell or get me to replace things. When it was time to talk money on parts, he showed me line by line the part and how much that costs, and then how much everything would be upfront. I am on a major budget and I felt like he was trustworthy and was only trying to get me to do what I needed to do. He came out and had the alternator changed, along with an oil change in less than a couple of hours. Easy-breezy.

Justin was very helpful in explaining what was wrong with my vehicle. During his inspection he found other things wrong with my car, but didn't put a lot of pressure on me to get the extra repairs now. He did a great job with my vehicle.

AL was very prompt in arriving on a Sunday morning to replace my alternator and Serpentine belt. I knew he was awesome when he knew where to find my battery. He was extremely courteous, friendly, and knowledgeable with my car. He left about 45 minutes ago, and I have already told 3 people about AL and yourmechanic.com. I was very thrilled with the pricing of the services. I had been quoted more than double the price at my local mechanic, plus I would have to pay for a tow to them. Thanks again AL!

Alternator Repair Service

How does an alternator help your car run?

The alternator is the component that charges the battery in your car. When you use electrical components in your car (stereo, lights, etc.), the battery loses power. The alternator recharges the battery, replenishing the lost battery power. The alternator is located in the engine compartment. If the alternator is not working properly, your car will only stay running for as long as the battery has power stored. Once the battery loses power, your car will not start. Normally, a malfunctioning alternator will turn on the battery warning light or will have a low volt gauge reading.

Alternator

Before repairing the alternator:

The mechanic should check the entire charging system before installing a new alternator, including checking battery cables for corrosion and the condition of the battery.

Steps when replacing an alternator:

  • Inspect entire charging system (battery, cables, alternator).
  • Inspect the drive belts.
  • Test alternator output.
  • Remove and replace alternator if found to be faulty.
  • Re-test alternator output.

Our recommendation for alternator replacements:

Ask your mechanic to inspect the condition of the charging system during every major service. The mechanic should also clean and tighten the battery cables during every major service.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Alternator?

  • Dead battery or battery will not hold a charge.
  • Dim lights.
  • Battery warning light is on.

Why repairing your alternator is important:

Your alternator charges your battery, which powers the electronics in your vehicle, such as the radio and the air conditioning. The battery is also needed to turn on your vehicle. A malfunctioning alternator will not charge your car’s battery, and your vehicle will eventually run out of battery life and not be able to start.
