Alternator Pulley Replacement Service

What is the Alternator Pulley all about?

Your alternator is one of the most important parts of your vehicle. While the battery is responsible for starting your car, once it’s cranked and running, all the electricity used by the engine and your various accessories is supplied by the alternator. The alternator is essentially an electromagnet that uses magnets and coils of wire to create an electric field. The magnets must spin inside the coils to create electricity, and that motion is provided by the drive belt, which loops over the alternator pulley and turns the alternator.

Generally, the alternator pulley is not the problem, it’s the pulley bearing. Most pulleys must be replaced when the bearings fail. However, there are instances where the pulley itself may be damaged, such as in a front-end collision.

Bearings fail over time through normal wear and tear. If you don’t replace the bearing before it fails, the alternator will no longer operate, depriving your car of electricity. It will continue to run until the battery has been drained, after which the engine will die. The belt could break if the pulley seizes completely, and that could cause other accessories to stop working.

Keep in mind:

  • The alternator pulley is not generally inspected during routine maintenance, but problems can be noticed during these services.

Our recommendation:

Your alternator is responsible for keeping your engine and accessories running. If the pulley/bearing fails, the engine won’t run and you’ll be stranded after the battery dies. Have one of our professional mechanics keep a close eye on the belts and pulleys under the hood to ensure that you catch this problem as soon as possible.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Alternator Pulley?

  • Squeaking or grinding from the alternator pulley
  • Pulley doesn’t turn

How important is this service?

Replacing your alternator pulley is critical, and it’s important to do so before the situation deteriorates. Your vehicle can stall in traffic or may not start after it is turned off. Because the pulley converts movement of the belt into movement within the alternator, failure means that the alternator will no longer operate. Have the alternator pulley replaced as soon as it is identified as faulty.
