Q: Wobbly Automatic Gear selector

asked by on December 21, 2016

The heaf selector inside the cabin is wobbly. It feels like the shifter is rolling around in a socket instead of just moving smoothly forward and back through the gear selections. The electronic readout is correct on the dash and the gears can be engaged but the gear selector stick moves side to side and can rotate a little. It feels like it is "loose in the socket" instead of following a "straight line". I'm curious how major of a concern this is and what it could be?! :)

A bad ignition coil (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/ignition-coil-replacement) can cause this if it is beginning to fail, resulting in intermittent starting problems.
