Q: why is my versa not accelerating after rain?

asked by on August 26, 2017

Whenever i hit a puddle of water when it rains or another driver splashes my car with rain water my check engine light and slip light come on, i lose accelerating power, i cant even get the car to go up a small hill even if my foot is pressing the pedal all the way. Also, after i turn the car off the headlights remain on, while the switch is already off, it drains the battery and i cannot get it to start unless i do a jump start. After a couple days of driving it the lights go off, had the codes read and it was related to the throttle position sensor, not sure whats wrong with it since I've had some mechanics all telling me different things like it's the throttle chamber that needs replacing, or the app sensor, maybe an open circuit on the throttle, i'm very frustrated since its rain season, help please.

My car has 83000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Transmission problems
My first recommendation is to have a certified mechanic verify the symptoms with a thorough transmission inspection (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/grinding-sound-from-transmission-inspection) that includes a road test. Explain to the technician what you are experiencing so they can look out for these things during...
The car starts up and turn off immediately
Hello. I would typically start by checking all of the sensors inputs with a scan tool to see if any are not reading correctly while starting. Most of the time, it is the air flow sensor (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/symptoms-of-a-bad-or-failing-mass-airflow-sensor) or the crank...
Truck turns over but wont start
Hello there, many common faults will cause your 1981 Dodge D150 to not start. The most common would be the battery (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/battery-replacement), starter (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/starter-replacement), batter cable (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/battery-cable-replacement), fuel pump (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/fuel-pump-replacement), fuel filter (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/fuel-filter-replacement), ignition switch (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/ignition-switch-replacement) or a wiring harness...
Why does my tensioner for my serpentine belt only move about 3" on my 2003 Santa Fe
The tensioner on your vehicle should move more than this. You need to start by checking the drive belt routing. If the belt is not routed right then it will appear that the tensioner is not moving enough. If the...
Hi, I have a problem with the hazard button, it does not turn on at all.
The circuit that that powers the emergency flashers (hazard lights) includes the switch, flasher unit, fuse, wiring, grounds, bulbs, bulb sockets, and sometimes a relay. Before the switch is condemned, the circuit is tested to see if power is even...
Engine sounds loud when first started then quiets down. Should I be concerned? 2012 Dodge Ram
Hi there - your symptoms suggest an oil supply or oil deliver issue when the engine is first started. Check the oil level first, then check to see what "weight" oil (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/what-type-of-oil-should-i-use) (i.e. 10W30) was used for the last oil...
The temperature gauge is at half way and the heater is blowing cold air with the heater on
The only purpose of the engine cooling system thermostat is to maintain optimal engine cooling system temperature, which is typically around 200 degrees. However, inasmuch as it is the engine coolant that provides the cabin heat (through the heater core...
I have a 98 Toyota 4Runner and my brother put the car battery on backwards and it like had an explosion when we jump start it
Hello. When this occurs it will blow several fuses in the fuse box, it can burn some fusible links, and it can even damage the computers. I usually check and replace the fuses first and then recheck it. If the...
Headlights don't turn off, wait a bit and flash highbeam or turning car back on switch off. Otherwise, unplugging fuses
The problem can be caused by a stuck headlight relay or light control module and the control switch. I would suggest replacing the light relay first and then seek a mechanic like one from YourMechanic to do further diagnosis if...
