Q: What's wrong with this lemon

asked by on March 01, 2017

I just bought a Nissan Quest, quick test drive at night on a dirt road. ( I felt like I was being rushed) ANYWAY. I picked it up today after I registered etc and I drove 15 miles and my car died. I obviously don't have any history on this car. But when I was driving it seemed like it was getting loud ( like a hole in the exhaust, or almost like a car that doesn't want to shift like a high rpm noise. It didn't drive "rough", you can tell it's age though. ANYWAY. I was driving and came to a stop sign, and I realized the van stalled, and was smoking from the engine. (Black smoke) had a burn smell to it. It wouldnt start, and I could tell my battery was dying quick from trying. BUT before getting to that stop sign I felt like I heard a light chain rattling noise (not sure if that helps) Anyway it got towed until I can get it checked in a few days. What seems to be the issue.

My car has 190000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

The most likely causes for the squeaking noise would be the drive belt (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/serpentine-drive-belt-replacement), axle (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/axle-cv-shaft-assembly-replacement), tensioner (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/drive-belt-tensioner-replacement), or idler pulley (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/idler-pulley-replacement).
