Q: What does it mean when the brake light comes on?

asked by on

My brake light and battery light came on

My car has 167980 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Hi there. When the brake light on the dash comes on, either there is a problem with the service brakes or the parking brake is engaged. First check to see if the parking brake lever is released all the way. There is a switch on the parking brake lever. It is possible that the switch may have failed. For the service brakes to make the light come on, check the brakes and see if there is any leaks or if the brakes are sticking on. Check the switch on the service brake pedal and see if its sticking. It is possible that the switch to the service brake pedal may have failed. If you need further assistance with the brake indicator light illuminating, then seek out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you.
