Q: Weird starting behavior

asked by on January 16, 2018

A few weeks ago, the touchscreen on my Jeep became unresponsive. I reset it by holding the volume button and time button. This resolved the issue. Last week, I tried to start car and ignition button read “run” however engine was not on. I turned the car off. When trying to restart, the brake pedal locked. I had to press very hard, but car ended up starting. The electronic system almost seemed like it reset. The heat/ac was off and the external temperature reading was way off. A few days later the check engine light came on. It turned off when I filled up my gas tank. The lock brake pedal/start issue has occurred on and off since then. Today, the Check engine light is back on. It is not flashing. What could be causing this? I’m having a lease return preinspection on Friday so I want to get resolved ASAP with minimal cost of course :)

My car has 24000 miles.

Hi there. This symptom can be cause by a plugged PCV system (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/positive-crankcase-ventilation-pcv-valve-replacement), or more likely severe blow-by, where combustion gasses blow the oil out of the crankcase and up to the valve covers. This could be cause by broken...
