Q: Weird sound coming from car

asked by on December 13, 2016

Car has been regularly serviced, very few issues at all. Last week there's been an odd noise intermittently coming from under the bonnet (I think). Sometimes sounds like fabric tearing, other times like a hose is spraying water on the side of the car. Never heard anything like it before, and I've owned the car 9yrs. Can't see anything with a visual inspection of the outside, under the hood and a ground level view from the undercarriage - tho I'm not a mechanic, so may be missing something. When the noise comes, it seems that if I drive slow (approx 60km or less) for 10-20 seconds, the noise stops. There doesn't seem to be a speed or other factor (AC being on, headlights being on, weight in the car etc) that is a common cause. Can anyone help please?

My car has 297000 miles.
My car has a manual transmission.
