Q: We can't drive our van very far

asked by on

There is sweet smelling smoke that comes out of our dashboard and fogs up the windows when the engine gets warm or hot. What do you think it could be?
My car has an automatic transmission.

That odor is characteristic of an anti-freeze leak. The leak could be within the cabin, at the heater core, or in the engine compartment and the fumes are simply being drawn into the cabin. To resolve it promptly, the service to request is a cooling system leak diagnostic. Once the source(s) of the leak are identified by a certified mechanic, the mechanic will estimate the repair for you and the repair can commence at once. Of course, if for some reason the inspection does not reveal an anti-freeze leak, the leak source of "other fluid" causing the odor will be identified. Initially, though, based on your description, it is most likely to be antifreeze leaking.
