Q: VW TDI GolfSportswagen 2015 buying a Manual vs DSG transmissions. I love driving manual. What are the pros/cons?

asked by on July 05, 2017

I own a 2012 Jetta Sportswagen TDI S (manual), and am selling it back to VW due to the diesel emissions scandal. I'm trying to decide between buying a 2015 Golf Sportswagen TDI SE with manual transmission vs. DSG transmission. I love driving my 2012 manual...I get less bored driving because I'm fully engaged.
Questions: 1) Are there any mechanical/cost reasons to go with one vs the other, ie problems with the DSG (I do know about replacing the transmission fluid and filter every 40,000 miles, costing about $300-$400). 2) Over time, will I be able to adjust to driving the DSG in "manual mode" and still get pleasure and the visceral connection to the car when shifting with an automatic clutch? 3) Since manual transmissions are harder to find, will there any more monetary value in having one when I sell in 10-12 years? (Planning to drive this for the next decade or so).

Thanks very much!
