Q: Volkswagen Polo 999cc Manual won't turn over/won't run

asked by on December 12, 2016

My Volkswagen Polo 999cc Manual (2000reg) won't start. - The car has not been used for 3 days whilst I have been on Holiday - I attempted to start the car for work this morning, the dashboard lights came on (no warning lights), CD started, I popped the heaters on etc this is my usual routine - I am parked on a hill facing downwards. I popped the car into neutral and turned the key. The car sounded like it was trying to start, but didn't, and made a consistent coughing noise, with the battery symbol on the dashboard alight - There is over a quarter of a tank of petrol, sufficient oil, and no visible leaks - I have attempted to jump start the car using jump cables, this did not work. I have also attempted to start the car by pumping the accelerator whilst turning the key. This also did not work - I have been advised to try a bump start, but am concerned that this will not solve the problem long term

If anyone has any advice on what the problem may be, I would appreciate - Thank you!

My car has 113000 miles.
My car has a manual transmission.
