Q: van loses power up big hills, dies when weather hot, when idling in gear. new alternator/batt/fuel cap.

asked by on June 19, 2017

the van loses power while driving up mountainous inclines & sometimes dies completely when the weather is hot & its idling in gear. this happens quite often @ stop signs & red lights if we dont put it into neutral @ just the right moment & rev the engine. it has a new (rebuilt) alternator, battery, & fuel cap. recently a friend adjusted the idle screw, the problem is the same or worse now. it seemed to be fixed @ 1st when he did this adjustment. we have had to drop gas directly into the engine a few times in order to get the van to start after it dies, then we pulled off the fuel cap (suggested by an o'reilley employee) & a lot of pressure blew out, the gas gauge went up a little, & it ran better for awhile, but that didn't last forever. the van is currently missing a muffler, it fell off a few months back, but we are getting one put on tomorrow. I sprayed carburetor cleaner in the carburetor before we left FL in march, but havent done that again. it also runs through oil like crazy.
