Q: starter engages while pressing clutch

asked by on March 19, 2018

Got in the car the other day and started it up. Car is a manual. 2008 kia sportage. When I pulled out every time I pressed the clutch in to switch gears it engaged the starter and started grinding because the car was already started!!! There's a mechanic not even 5 blocks away so immediately pulled in and every mechanic that worked there was totally baffled. They had never seen this issue and the man has been a mechanic 23 years. His best guess was the ignition switch. But I'm not working with a huge budget here, so I need a little more input. If anybody has a clue what this could be please let me know.

My car has 120000 miles.
My car has a manual transmission.
