Q: Why do I have a code for a slow O2 sensor and is that causing my stalling on my 2002 Saab 9-5

asked by on February 22, 2017

So my 02 Saab 9-5 has this weird issue with starting and not stay running unless I push the gas pedal. Also it stalls when I stop sometimes. And my car is giving these codes out (o2 sensor ckt slow response (bank 1 sensor 1), and Heated Oxegen sensor or (HO2S) Insufficient Switching (bank 1 sensor 1). But when I take the OBII scan tool and clear the codes the car runs great, starts great runs great and seems like it has more power but then in a few minutes/miles the engine light comes back on and starts to run crappy again. What could be the issue here? Could it be just a dirty mass air flow sensor? Or?

My car has 146000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Should I get the piston rings replaced or just swap the entire engine?
First off, if it isn't smoking (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/smoke-from-engine-or-exhaust-inspection), it probably isn't burning all that oil. A quart a week is four quarts a month and about 1000-2000 miles. That's a lot of oil. It is most likely a combination of leaking...

To estimate a variety of leaks please request a leak inspection/diagnostic (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/oil-fluid-leak-inspection). Car is making a knocking sound on passenger side. It started a few days again out of nowhere. It doesn't do it every time it start
I would have the knocking sound investigated and resolved first because it may be engine related and thus a priority.
