Q: Shifter button will not engage to put into gear

asked by on

Shifter button does not engage to put into gear.

My car has 140000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Hello, thank you for writing in. There is a shift override button located on the gear shift for towing purposes. This overrides all of the sensors so the vehicle can be moved without the key and other power sources. You should be able to use a screw driver to unlock the shifter. This is a temporary fix, however and will not fix the actual issue. There is a solenoid around the gear shit that is actuated by the button, and this solenoid may have failed. You can test them with a multi-meter, but usually they are relatively inexpensive and easy to change out. The ignition switch, and the brake light switch both effect the shifter’s ability to change gears. These are all safety features to make sure vehicle do not wander away. Look into the listed components, one of them is very likely to be your issue.
