Q: Rough gear engagement

my car jerks when i engage reverse gear or drive
My car has an automatic transmission.

It sounds like your car may be low on transmission fluid or you may potentially have a faulty transmission control solenoid causing an erratic shifting into gear. As you may know, transmissions use hydraulic pressure created by the transmission fluid to transition from gear to gear. When there is not enough pressure in the transmission due to low fluid levels, this can cause a delayed or jerking reaction when transitioning from park into gear as you describe. This type of problem is generally worse in cold weather simply due to the fact that the transmission fluid is much more sluggish in cold weather. I would recommend having a professional from YourMechanic come to your location to perform a transmission fluid service on your vehicle.
