We have a 1990 chevy truck and the reverse went out on it and was stuck in high gear. We have changed the transmission fluid and filter which seemed to help in the sense that it can be shifted easily into all gears now where before it would skip gears or be stuck in high gear. Now that we did that and tried putting it in reverse we can hear it shift into gear and it acts like its trying to back up but does not do anything.
My car has an automatic transmission.
To rule out a hydraulic fault, you can check for adequate line pressure, using external gauges, while in the various gear positions. If pressure is out of spec. you would then look at the valve body for leaks but it is also possible that a piston or accumulator is leaking. If line pressure is good, that would point to a mechanical fault such as a broken or loose band.
