Q: Rear brakes..is it necessary to loosen cable at equalizer first then remove cable bracket from behind caliper?

I'm replacing the rear brake pads and do I need to loosen the tension at the equalizer first and then remove the cable bracket assembly behind the caliper before I can bottom the piston? And here's the part im confused about...does the piston get turned inwards or pressed in?
