Q: Question on brakes

When ever I'm driving and I press down on the breaks nothing happens at all and then I have to push ferther down on the brakes for it to start breaking. I don't think it's normal because cars I've driven start breaking when you barely even push on it. So I was wondering what the problem could be or is
