Q: OVERHEATING

asked by on February 19, 2017

MY 1998 FORD E350 WAS OVERHEATING (AT LEAST THATS WHAT THE TEMPERATURE GAUGE WAS SAYING). IT WAS PUT IN THE SHOP, WHERE THEY REPLACED THE THERMOSTAT. AFTER GETTING IT OUT OF THE SHOP, IT WAS STILL OVERHEATING. TURNING THE TRUCK OFF AND THEN BACK ON RESET THE GAUGE, WHICH WORKS FOR ABOUT 5-10 MINUTES OF DRIVING. A PART STORE SUGGESTED I CHANGE THE TEMPERATURE SENSOR. DOING THIS HAS CAUSED MY TEMPERATURE GAUGE TO NOT WORK AT ALL WITH THE NEW PART, BUT ONCE I PUT THE OLD PART BACK IN, THE TEMP GAUGE WORKS. I FIGURED THE NEW PART WAS DEFECTIVE, SO RETURNED IT FOR A DIFFERENT ONE, AND IT STILL DOES THE SAME THING.

My car has 223929 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Will a sticking valve burn out my variable valve timing solenoid?
Hi there. Typically a sticking valve does not cause the VVT solenoid (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/how-long-does-a-variable-valve-timing-vvt-solenoid-last) to fail, but it can increase vacuum pressure inside the motor that will lead to other timing related issues, which can trigger the same error codes.
