asked by on June 08, 2016

i was cruising highway speeds when suddenly clanking noise(sounded like bearing or rod knock)then motor stopped running. When it came to stop,i tried to start motor, it took a few cranks then started & died. Tried restart, got started, when tried to accelerate to move clanking noise started not real loud, i was able to move vehicle to a parking spot9100 ft) then stopped engine & had vehicle towed home. Have done nothing since then & i need to pull head & see what possibly came loose. Car had no smoke, but still will start & run at idle speed. Possibly had something contaminated oil, which may have caused failure. 1997 Toyota Camry LE v6 auto with a/c. exellent runner always till that critical day-bought new best car ever. 289000miles. Steering tightens up when turning left while moving and there is a rubbing sound from driver's tire at 10-15 MPH.
The noise you mention seems more likely to be a wheel bearing (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/wheel-bearings-replacement) failing - they get quite noisy with higher road speed, and get even noisier while turning (the outer wheel catches more load). It is possible the tire...

Removing the cross-over pipe will be the required process to replace the leaking gasket if this is the source. i recommend a...

Brown liquid leaking under passenger side no dash lights
The brown liquid you are seeing sounds like you may have a leaking heater core or radiator (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/radiator-replacement) that may have some rust inside, which may explain the brown color and steaming. I would suggest having a professional from YourMechanic...
