Driving across the state of WA. Go to Ellensburg and stopped to fuel up. When I got back on the highway I couldn't get past 2nd gear. Now, I could manually shift to 3rd or higher but it was obviously not shifting. Could only get to about 30 miles an hour and it was starting to smell. Pulled over. Looked under hood. Nothing. I had checked oil - it was fine - and there appears to be plenty of coolant. Waited a few minutes.... - tried again. now it all seems fine. What happened - and/or what should I do?

My car has 140000 miles.
My car has a manual transmission.
